A few weeks back I posted smartphone vs digital camera, and based on the Facebook comments, the passion of photographers was heard loud and clear…cameras rule.
Well, this week Samsung announced its DV300F wi-fi enabled camera…the first DualView model to offer Wi-Fi connectivity
According to the press release, “The camera’s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables users to email their images or upload them to social media sites including Facebook, Picasa, Flickr and YouTube. In addition, images saved onto the camera’s microSD memory card, can be saved to a home PC without wires, by using the Auto PC Backup function. Cloud services, including Samsung’s AllShare Play and Microsoft SkyDrive, allows users to store and share their precious pictures from anywhere.”
Is this the beginning of taking digital photography to the next level…directly to the cloud whether it’s a social media cloud like Facebook or Flickr, or more importantly, your own personal cloud?
I’m no photographer, but I do like to take photos and play with the image and if it’s something I am proud of, will share it with family and friends. I would say of any 100 photos I take, maybe 10 of them make it to the social space, yet all of them sit on my personal cloud at home.
One of my new year’s resolutions is to take more photos and I encourage my kids to do the same. It’s a simple way to document your life day by day, as long as I can stand the process of taking them from camera to iMac to cloud and keep them organized in a manner that makes it simple to search and edit when the mood strikes. That is the one thing I tackled over the holiday break – photo library organization. I think the idea of wirelessly uploading photos to my home system or personal cloud is a winning proposition for me, as long as the camera provides the tools to maintain an organized library.
What would be even cooler is if a camera like Samsung’s DV300F could send photos directly to a wireless personal cloud storage device like the GoFlex Satellite drive. Maybe that’s wishful thinking, but what photographer wouldn’t want 500GB of wireless storage at their disposal?
