Intel Atom processor’s impact on storage

Business Week’s article: Intel Wants to Be Inside Everything has been getting some airtime (showing up in several of my feeds and social communities).  The story talks about how the Intel Atom processor is showing up in places you would never imaging a CPU to live. Intel even ran a contest for college students who imagined new uses of the Atom processor.

Intel’s Atom processor is a beautiful thing for storage. Face it, the more internet enabled machines in the world, the more data is created, the more storage is needed.  The Lion King’s circle of life for data if you will.

  • Enable the device
  • Create the data
  • Store the information

Think about the possibilities of where processors could show up, and what they will enable in terms of data creation.  One example was highlighted in this month’s Fast Company.  “Staci Palmer, Director of strategic market development, low-power embedded processing, Intel, works with equipment manufacturers to develop applications using Intel’s Atom processors to lend intelligence and Internet connectivity to tractors.”

In addition to farming, where else could we see machines, even industries become more data driven? The answer comes with automation. Where are we seeing more and more innovation in the area of automation? As Staci Palmer said, “Farmers have been applying science and analytic technology to their business for decades. This is just more advanced technology.”

Where else do we need such advanced technology?
