It’s not totally about tablets at CES

It’s without a doubt the year for tablets at CES.  Over dinner last night, we talked about how there at least a couple dozen new tablet systems being introduced at CES this year. Asus alone has 4!

But, reading through some of the pre-show buzz, there is some action in the “old-school” laptop space.  Both AMD and Intel heat things up with their APUs – Accelerated Processing Units – that combine a CPU and a graphics processor.

AMD’s Fusion E-Series, C-Series, and A-Series advanced processors run the gambit from embedded systems, tablets, and netbooks, to mainstream notebooks. What’s exciting about Fusion APUs is the power they bring to the computing experience.  On AMD’s press release, they used terms like:

  • HD 2.0 Everywhere
  • Personal Supercomputing

The E-Series appears to be the bread and butter product for mainstream desktops and laptops, and from a storage perspective, HD 2.0 Everwhere, and Personal Supercomputing are terms that catch my attention.  The idea of making content creation and consumption faster is what drives storage capacity demand.

On the Intel side, 2nd Generation Intel Core processors also add integrated graphics processing, but Intel offers more than just a processor. With technology like:

Intel’s “focus on the areas where most people are computing today: high-definition (HD) video, photos, mainstream gaming, multi-tasking and online socializing and multimedia.”  From a storage perspective, I especially like that “consumers can edit, convert and share videos with friends and family. Intel estimated that a 4-minute HD video that used to take 4 minutes to convert to play on an iPod* would now take just 16 seconds.”

Now that’s music to my ears.  Face it, video is where it’s at when it comes to AMD and Intel’s latest announcements.  Whether consumers are creating video content, or consuming it, both processor giants are stepping up their game to make the desktop and laptop legitamate in a tech news world dominated by “tablet” wars.  Couple either of these next generation processors with a Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid drive, and you have one kickin’ system at an affordable price.

Long live those “old-school” desktops and laptops!

…but I am looking forward to seeing some sweet tablets tomorrow…stay tuned.
