The next computer-themed cover of Time magazine might just show a smartphone.
Case in point: Google predicts that the classic PC will be dead in 3 years, replaced by a smartphone.
And it kind of makes sense:
Everything you can do on a PC now, you’ll be able to do on a cell phone. Like playing games. Or checking/sending email. Or surfing the web.
Now, in the workplace, the change won’t be so radical. You’ll still want a big monitor for many applications (spreadsheets, CAD, …), but the big monitor might just be attached to a “thin client”, which is connected to a virtual PC inside a big server farm.
If an employee has a need for more RAM or more processor cores, this can be done instantaneously by tweaking the settings of the virtual machine.
