LSI’s new SAS JBODs…just add drives

lsi_2600_system_topToday, LSI launched a couple new JBOD solutions into the channel centered around growing digital media storage requirements. The 620J (2U, 2.5-inch 24 drive module) and the 630J (2U, 3.5-inch 12 drive module).

Both are built on the 6Gb/s SAS interface and are designed to work with LSI’s MegaRAID and 3Ware line of RAID 6Gb/s SAS RAID controllers and 6Gb/s SAS drives from the likes of Seagate. What Seagate drives to use to outfit these new JBOD enclosures?  It depends on your application.

Nearline applications:
LSI 620J with 24 Seagate Constellation 500GB SAS drives would yield 12.0TB of storage.
LSI 630J with  12 Seagate Constellation ES 2.0TB SAS drives would yield 24.0TB of storage.

Mainstream Server / Storage applications:
LSI 620J with 24 Seagate Savvio 10K 600GB SAS drives would yield 14.4TB of storage

High Performance Server / Storage applications:
LSI 620J with 24 Seagate Savvio 15K 300GB SAS drives would yield 7.2TB of storage
LSI 630J with 12 Seagate Cheetah 15K 600GB SAS drives would yield 7.2TB of  storage

Of course, your could always mix and match drives within the same box and develop your own customized tiered storage solution. Perhaps a handful of Savvio 15K drives for transactional / database support, and a slew of Constellation drives to dump data too for future reference.

It’s simple…just add drives.
