Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive – win your bragging rights back

Today, Seagate unwrapped the Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid drive.

What promises to be simply the fastest notebook drive on the planet…heck, throw a bracket on it, and it may be the fastest desktop drive, Momentus XT takes the pure speed of 4GB of SSD and the capacity (500, 320, & 250GB) of a hard drive and morphs them into a single 2.5-inch device that delivers SSD like performance at the cost of a hard drive. Gamers and power users craving SSD performance but not wanting to fork over the cash, take a breath. This drive is 80% faster than a 7200 RPM drive, and 20% faster than a 10,000 RPM SATA drive at a price you can afford.

Seagate touts its Adaptive Memory Technology as the secret sauce that delivers such speed. Without going into too much detail, Adaptive Memory Technology memorizes your every move and throws the files you need most onto the 4GB of SSD so you boot faster, load applications and games faster, and with 32MB of cache and a 7200RPM spindle speed, even write faster.

There’s more in it for you than the pure speed alone. Seagate is offering a chance to be one of the first to own a Momentus XT, so you can brag all you want. Let us know what you think of this game changing drive by commenting on this blog post. Speak your mind, share your excitement, or even your skepticism. If you win, we are confident we’ll make you a believer.

Winners will be drawn randomly and will receive one of five Momentus XT 500GB hard drives and a data transfer kit that makes upgrading your system simple. (See how simple) So gamers, and power users hungry for SSD like speed…speak up, and let us know you think. Afterall, this drive was made for you.

My biggest concern with SSD’s in general is when used as a boot drive, if you don’t put your page file on a non SSD (which would slow things down a bit), you face premature failure of the device because of the nature of how flash memory works.

This is an OLD concern, mind, but I’ve not yet see anyone do the kind of heavy duty, random write tests that I need to see in order to feel better about it. Can anyone provide me links to any tests?

  27. Chris Valle May 24, 2010 at 9:33 am - Reply

I can’t wait to upgrade to SSDs, but I love the option of the hybrid. This is also a great option for upgrades in the office, when the boss is on a budget.

  28. Mark Wojtasiak May 24, 2010 at 9:35 am - Reply

@bnewton – Thanks for the comment. Based on our testing 4GB offers the perfect blend of capacity and price. Since we are mirroring only frequently used data to the SSD flash to boost read / access speed, the more flash we add may just increase the price at this point, but we always keep our options open for future releases.

  32. jl May 24, 2010 at 9:44 am - Reply

this looks awesome but any smaller size drives? This would be perfect for my u810 to speed things up but the 2.5 is too big for it.

  33. Brian May 24, 2010 at 9:47 am - Reply

I’ve been waiting for a device like this to come to the notebook market. For some time Enterprise disk array manufacturers have been implementing systems which use DRAM or Flash as a giant read cache in order to speed up performance or reduce spindle count. In lots of cases these systems do away with FC or SAS disk entirely. Enterprise folks simply just size for the write portion of their workloads under this paradigm. This approach is taken because of the cost/capacity differential for true Flash storage is simply still too expensive outside of some edge case workload scenarios. The testing results I’ve seen on various postings for this new Momentus XT drive are more of the same in terms of what I expected to see out of such a hybrid approach. No longer do laptop users have to choose between performance or capacity for the most part. Write intensive users won’t benefit much from this, nor would I expect this disk to make any difference for large sequential read workloads. (the working set is simply larger than the cache can support) However for most users, who mainly read from disk more than write, and in small increments or bursts, this will make a huge difference.

  34. Mark Wojtasiak May 24, 2010 at 9:57 am - Reply

@jl – Thanks for the comment and question…2.5″ is currently the only form factor we are offering for solid state hybrid.

  35. Chris May 24, 2010 at 10:03 am - Reply

I think this is a brilliant idea, and it will help to bridge the gap between the performance of a SSD and the price of a HDD. I would love to have this drive for gaming!

Combining the capacity of a 7200RPM platter with the speed of embedded NAND flash memory. Seagate may just have a winner here for the notebook market. It’s about time a storage manufacturer released a hybrid notebook solution! The engineering work behind this product is much appreciated Seagate.

I can’t WAIT to get this drive, this is exactly what I’ve wanted , and the price is amazing. I was hoping the 500GB would be under $250, and what a shocker to find it! I’m hoping as time goes on we’ll see the size of the SSD increase to 8GB and 16GB, but this is going to be a major game changer for me. Plus, I’m so glad this is Seagate coming out with the technology, the brand I have in all my computers.

This is fantastic. I was considering to buy a new Macbook Pro. My current Macbook Pro is about 14 months old, and the 250GB drive is becoming small.

Also, it’s a 2.4 Ghz, so the processor speed isn’t really an issue.

It looks like the momentus XT could give my macbook

    – a new lease on life
    – give me better performance then if I were to buy a new macbook of the shelf
    – give me increased storage capacity
    – save me money because I don’t have to buy a new macbook!

All in all, a great option.

  209. PendragonUK May 26, 2010 at 4:13 pm - Reply

I have watched with interest the development of SSD. My concerns of the tech have been ones of cost, capacity and degradation. Like all new tech they are prohibitively expensive. This expense has not improved over time as the capacity is increased. The capacity is still too small for desktop use even if it could be of use in a net/notebook. SSD’s are super fast, but still not as fast as more exotic RAM based devises. The one concern of mine that I have still to be addressed is one of longevity. SSD’s still have a limited number of reliable cycles. They are awfully expensive for something that will in time consume it’s self!

I see this new drive from Seagate to be a compromise worthy of our attention. The best of both, The proven technology of the platter and the new hotness that is Solid State!

When they are as cheap as the pure mechanical hard drive then I too will have one or five 😉

Wow, SSD performance without having to upgrade to W7? AWESOME.

I’d use these in a desktop, just to get the performance. Now, why don’t they do this with 3.5″ drives also? Could you imagine, SSD performance with a 2TB drive? That’d be cool.
    Also, I wonder the performance in a RAID 0 config… 🙂

This is definitely a good replacement for an older computer/laptop – it would give it the much needed speed regardless of OS.

  247. SirMango May 27, 2010 at 6:06 pm - Reply

I’m a bit skeptical at how the Adaptive Memory Technology functions. I truly wonder how efficient it is at detecting the most used files on the hard drive, besides the files needed to boot the system. If a user has many files (i.e. multiple games, multiple applications, etc.) that they use though, I suspect that it will rapidly saturate the 4GB solid state memory that is built into this hybrid drive. At which point, would the benefit of the AMT start diminishing for new applications? Well, that’s what I would think.

I wonder if there will be a boost in loading speed for all application, sort of like SuperPrefetch but on drugs. If there is such a speed boost and that AMT functions well, then this is definitely a good alternative to an SSD. I looked quickly over the video demo on Seagate’s website, though, and SSD still holds the performance crown. Unfortunately, SSDs are expensive, especially if you want a lot of storage! This is where the Momentus XT has an advantage: storage space. The space that the Momentus XT offers isn’t on par to the 2TB 7200RPM HDDs you can currently buy at a modest price, but the Momentus XT does offer a nice performance boost. From the looks of it, the Momentus XT seems to be a great compromise between a typical SSD (speed) and a 7200RPM HDD (storage space). I applaud Seagate for taking the initiative of making such an interesting device.

Anyway, SSD is probably the best upgrade you can get for your system at the moment; everything will seem snappier! I will wait to read some reviews from reputable technology websites (my favourites include HardwareCanucks, techPowerUp! and Vortez Hardware) before I jump into buying the Momentus XT. Or, hopefully, I might be able to get my hands on one of these through this contest!

I put an 80gb SSD into my work machine, I’d love to see how this hybrid drive would work in my personal machine. Besides booting quicker and drastically extending the battery life, I bet it’s going to be better overall – hopefully I’ll have a chance to find out!

This would be a great idea, can’t wait to see how it performs with games, and huge SQL databases. Only downside is that it is only SATA 3Gb/s, not the newer SATA 6Gb/s. As always though, Seagate makes top notch, cutting edge hardware.

I am dying to get my hands on this drive. I have a need for large amounts of storage on my desktop (used as PVR) but I want speed, and quiet…yes, I want it all! 🙂

I have tried every fast 7200 desktop, most are loud except Seagate’s XT desktop – best 7200 desktop drive on the market today (WD Black sounds aweful)! I still want faster times, mainly startup. This is huge because I have a good 2-3GB of startup processes.

I have already pre-ordered SIX of these drives in the 500GB. Two will be in a RAID for my primary desktop drive (with the desktop XT as a secondary). Will have one drive in at least two different notebooks, and from there, I could order a dozen more.

I just don’t want to wait – this is bigger than the introduction of the quad-core processor…I WANT THIS, NOW!!!!! 🙂

Ok, I’ll try to be patient…

from what i’ve seen compared to mechanical drives(at Legitreviews) read/writes are beat only by Velociraptors, 113MB/s for each is preetty nice for the price this is set for, i have an aging barracuda 7200.10 which is up at 85-95MB/s write/read

Seagate has the performance 7200rpm market to itself basically, keep up the good work!

I think it’s a great idea, especially if it works like it’s supposed to. It seems like there might be some transition to make hybrid hard drives more mainstream. Further, it might just be fill a gap until SSD’s are more affordable than standard hard drives. That being said, if it really improves performance, bring it on!

I’ve been really lucky so far, so here goes ….
I just bought an older Toshiba Qosmio (one from 96 I think) for a really good deal, I am on my way to my monster computer on a budget, $400 for the computer so far, the last owner maxed it up to 4 GB Memory and it’s sporting a C2D at 2Ghz … great specs and a great machine …. downside, I need two new Hd’s … there is currently two 100 Gb units in there, striped for speed but for a measly 200Gb total storage. No where what I need because I am trying to make it as a mobile DJ.
I need TWO of these, striped to really complete my monster on a budget.
Now rest assured, if I DON”T win one … no worries … for I have seen the data and I’m a believer ! …. but it would sure be great if I only had to buy one, instead of both … I will buy both if necessary, as soon as they get to my local computer shop.

I wanna test this new technology with all my games and see how it gives my games a greater speed.
I will also test it on my ORACLE server as i work in SAP with huge database, so by using this new HDD, I guess Data Accessing Speed will be reduced greatly

The results shown in the videos online are quite surprising. I wasn’t expecting the hybrid to outperform a raptor, or come close to an SSD. I am intrigued by this drive’s technology; however, I don’t think it will work as well in a RAID Configuration.

I am curious to try it, and see if Seagate’s Algorithm will work if the drives are striped.

I do a lot of photo and video editing of home movies. Right now the speed is alright, but on longer videos, it takes a while. After watching your demonstration of comparing the 4 drives, i’m very impressed about swapping my crappy 5400rpm notebook drive out for this! I’m sure its going to make a huge difference in performance and make my life so much easier!

The computers I own are a 13″ MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini. Both are pretty quick, but i’m sure this bad boy can make it that much quicker to boot up, run tasks, and still have time to do more.

Plus, I can brag about getting the coolest drive out on the market from Seagate and not paying a dime for it! Bigger kudos if you send me two drives 🙂

Plus two 160GB, One 250 Gb, One 400GB, one 500GB, and two 1.5TB 3.5′ drives: all Seagate, all living. This new drive seems to be the right drive at the right time. @A.J Berkel What you could try to do is use an IDE to USB adapter or enclosure and connect/install the U Series drive to the adapter. Connect this via USB to your Acer and see if you can mount the drive and explore the contents. If you can, you should be able to copy all of the needed files over to your Acer laptop. Hope this helps!

After seeing the performance reports and videos, I must ask: Why is there not a desktop version of this drive? Wouldn’t the additional space for parts allow for higher density flash chips, larger platters and therefore, lower prices?

I want the performance of this drive, but without the price tag. I’ll be first in line to buy a desktop variant of this concept, if that ever happens.
