Android TV Could Be the Streaming Media Device You’ve Always Wanted

Google recently announced Nexus Player – a streaming media device in collaboration with Asus that will run Android TV. Not only will you be able to access media content available from the Google Play store, but also any Android games that you’ll be able to play on your big screen TV with the included gamepad. It’s safe to say we know a little bit about the importance of streaming media so we can easily say this is a pretty big deal.

While it’s no surprise that Google has entered the streaming media devices market, it’s also not their first attempt – that honor goes to Google TV. While a good effort to forge new ground in streaming media, Google TV was limited to being able to only stream content from the web and apps onto your set. Android TV does all this and more by adding the gaming component and casting functionality.

When the Nexus devices (Nexus 5, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9) release this fall, they will all come installed with Android’s latest OS, Lollipop, which has features that sound as sweet as its name.  One that particularly stands out is the aforementioned ability to share across devices. With Lollipop and your Nexus device, you can enjoy your song, movie or game transitioning from your tablet to your phone and to your Nexus Player when you get home without bringing the party to a screeching halt.

“Lollipop is made for a world where moving throughout the day means interacting with a bunch of different screens—from phones and tablets to TVs.” – Android SVP Sundar Pichai

Given today’s technology climate where people interact with multiple devices during the course of a day, this functionality could be a game changer – no pun intended.

Let’s also not forget that Android TV will be Google Cast ready. Through your Google Chromecast, you’ll be able to watch entertainment from your favorite apps – including your personal channel dedicated to content you’ll be able to stream from your Seagate Central.

With Android TV, Google has again proven to be a development powerhouse creating innovative products that enhance the consumer experience. Now let’s see Apple and Roku respond.

The Nexus Player is available for pre-order $99 and will be shipping early November. Seagate Central is available now!
