Are We Experiencing (Another) Golden Age of Television?

The television landscape is very different now than it was in the first Golden Age of Television (basically around 1940-1960 if keeping track).  The television market has exploded in the last few decades going from the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) and adding literally hundreds of networks including Fox, CW, USA, TNT, TBS and countless others. Quick sidebar – remember when MTV actually used to play music videos?

When you add premium cable networks to the mix (e.g. HBO or Showtime) as well as streaming network services like Netflix or Hulu, who have their own original programming, it does seem like the television streets are paved with gold.

As content consumers, we have a ton of choices. I have many friends who’ve forgone cable service and are strictly leveraging streaming capabilities to consume content.  I’m personally finding less time for other activities because there’s so much quality programming on that I want to keep up with. That’s not even including older shows no longer on the air that I’d still like to watch due to hearing their praises sung by friends or family.  (*Cough* The Wire *Cough*)

Media consumption is only going to increase as we continue our technological advances. Watching your favorite shows from mobile devices in what’s quickly transforming into an “On Demand” world is becoming the norm.

“Television is no longer something you experience just on your TV.”

~ Anthony Rose of Beamly

Hopefully one day our R&D teams will find a way to transfer your favorite shows onto what I’m calling “optimized for mobile” devices like Seagate Central or Seagate Wireless Plus. Sure, streaming off networks works fine, but there’s something about having it be your own — and free from the need for a wireless or mobile connection — that just gives a great sense of entitlement.

Are we experiencing another “Golden Age of Television?” – based on how full my DVR is right now (which is a great time to plug the Seagate DVR Expander), I’d say definitely so!
