  • CES 2017: LaCie Delivers Big Upgrades for Creative Pros

Photographers, videographers and other creative professionals are capturing, editing and delivering bigger and bigger files, which requires more efficient storage technologies to help them tame an exponential increase in data.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, LaCie, Seagate’s premium storage brand, announced major upgrades to a pair of its most popular products for helping creative pros streamline their workflows. Here’s what’s new.

Watch Clement Barberis of LaCie’s product marketing team walk through the new features on our two new LaCie products, today at CES:

LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt USB-C
The LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt™ USB-C now combines tough durability with USB-C compatibility and fast Thunderbolt speeds. Now, creative pros can store even more footage (and carry fewer drives), with capacities of up
to 5TB. The LaCie Rugged, which also comes in 2TB and 4TB capacities, features Seagate’s BarraCuda® drives for best-in-class reliability and performance.
lacie-rugged-thunderbolt-usb-c“This is an ideal solution for creative pros who need to easily store large-sized projects while working in the field,” says Clement Barberis, LaCie product marketing manager. “It’s bus-powered for complete mobility, and it can stand up to dust, accidental drops and water, thanks to its all-terrain design.”

A 1TB solid-state drive version delivers speeds of up to 510MB/second. “That’s a 30 percent increase over the previous (SSD) generation,” Barberis says. “That means creative pros working on more time-sensitive projects can transfer 100GB of content in about three minutes.”

Thanks to its new USB-C interface, users can connect the LaCie Rugged drive to both USB 3.0-compatible computers, as well as USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 systems. An integrated Thunderbolt cable is compatible with first-generation Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 interfaces, which means the drive can be used with more types of computers than any other storage solution on the market.

The new drive is backed by a three-year warranty and will be available at LaCie resellers later this quarter. Prices start at $249.99.

LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 3

lacie-d2-thunderbolt-3The new LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 3 is designed as a desktop storage companion for limited-capacity SSD-based laptops and all-in-one computers. The LaCie d2 drive delivers up to 10TB of storage for bandwidth-intensive creative applications. It features a Seagate BarraCuda Pro 7200RPM enterprise-class hard drive, the fastest 10TB desktop drive available.
“Most of the laptops used by creative pros have SSDs inside for fast performance, but they don’t get the capacity they need for things like 4K and 8K photo and video editing,” says Barberis. “This is a great drive for storage expansion, backup and archiving.”

The LaCie d2 drive features dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, along with a USB-C port (which also can be used to power a compatible laptop, such as the latest MacBook Pro) for universal compatibility.

The drive delivers speeds of up to 240MB/second, and its aluminum enclosure helps reduce drive noise and vibration. The LaCie d2 is available in 6TB, 8TB and 10TB capacities, and comes with an industry-best five-year warranty. It will be available this quarter, with prices starting at $429.99
