This will be my last post about San Diego Comic Con, I swear. Well, except for the video interviews with iFanboy, that is. But after reading this article about the restoration of classic films onto Blu-ray, I just had to comment.
I’ve posted in the past about the importance of music preservation for future generations, but the same need applies to film. There are a ton of great films from Hollywood’s past that shouldn’t be lost so I’m glad to hear that companies like Warner Bros. are embracing this need to preserve our cinematic legacy.
Highlighting the Blu-Ray release of Singin’ in the Rain which releases this week, it was encouraging to know what lengths the studio went to to ensure a quality product including making adjustments “pixel by pixel for ultra resolution.”
The article went on to discuss other films that are being updated to this format including House of Wax and Dial M for Murder and one I’m hoping for, the live action Shazam series from the 70’s and for my mother, Star Trek: The Next Generation.
With the ability to store up to 25GB of data on a single disc (50GB for dual layer discs), Blu-Ray is a great medium for storage that looks to be around for some time to come.
Hollywood has really established a presence at San Diego Comic Con in recent years and it’s great to raise awareness for preservation projects like this not only for fans of this generation but of generations to come. Like our music history, our cinematic history is equally important and shouldn’t be lost or forgotten.
What’s an older TV series or film that you’d like to see digitally restored?
Me? I’m waiting for Manimal. (Don’t judge!)
