Install This! Seagate, Newegg Team for SSHD Promotion

—By Steve Pipe

Equipped with a screwdriver and step-by-step instructions, most consumers can install a hard drive with little difficulty. But what happens when you add a blindfold to the mix?

Seagate recently teamed with online retailer Newegg for a promotion in which blindfolded gaming enthusiasts were challenged to install a solid-state hybrid drive in a Sony PlayStation 4 console.

Here’s how the promotion worked. Six contestants were paired up into three teams of two. Each team had a non-blindfolded contestant, who talked his partner through the installation process. The winning partners then faced off against one another—without blindfolds—for a chance to win a PS4. All contestants who took part in the online promotion each received a 1TB Laptop SSHD from Seagate.

Seagate hybrid drives combine the blazing speed of a solid-state drive with the big capacity benefits of a traditional hard disk drive. For gamers, that means “an improved gaming experience and more storage capacity for the newest game titles,” says Erin Sun, senior manager, Americas marketing at Seagate.

Sponsoring Newegg’s first “Install This! Build Challenge” was a natural fit for Seagate. The Los Angeles-based Newegg is one of the top online retailers of consumer-electronics gear in the U.S., and one of Seagate’s biggest resellers.

“The contest was a fun way to show how easy it is to upgrade to an SSHD, and it highlighted the benefits of our hybrid drives,” says Sun. “We wanted people to laugh a little and see how our Seagate SSHD is rocking the gaming community.”

Check out the video, above, to see how the contestants fared, and feel free to share it with all your video game friends – especially if you think they can do better. =)
