PC World: Seagate BarraCuda Pro “Best We’ve Ever Tested”

Absolutely fantastic, truly vast and stupendously fast

best hard drive ever reviewedPC World magazine got their hands on Seagate’s new BarraCuda Pro hard drive — the world’s biggest, fastest HDD for high-performance desktop, creative pro and gaming applications. And their review is nothing short of rave.

“I’ve used ‘Vast and fast’ to describe previous hard drives I’ve reviewed, but I’m not sure that it’s ever been this spectacularly well-deserved,” gushed veteran tech reviewer Jon Jacobi in the review.

What’s so great? Well, 10TB is unique, and PC World loved the low power consumption. But it was BarraCuda Pro’s performance that really blew them away:

Astounding transfer rates convinced us

“Seagate’s 3.5-inch, 7,200rpm, SATA 6Gbps Barracuda Pro not only delivers a stunning 10TB of storage, it laid down some rather astounding transfer rates: 240MBps in both directions of our 20GB copy tests,” said Jacobi. “At first, we didn’t quite believe what we were seeing, but several repeats and throwing even larger data sets at the drive convinced us.”

Of course Jacobi also points out 10TB is so huge, if you put all your eggs in this enormous basket, you’d better back it up regularly. I couldn’t agree more — in fact you should always backup those eggs no matter what size your drive is! I hope this is becoming common sense by now: all local storage should always be backed up, either with an external drive, or cloud storage, or both.

Best ever, by a long shot

Seagate BarraCuda Pro 10TB hard driveAfter running all his tests, Jacobi’s conclusion warms my heart as it’s about the best conclusion a drive maker could want! “This 10TB drive is truly vast and stupendously fast (for a hard drive), and is also miserly on the power consumption,” he said. “All in all, it’s the best consumer 3.5-inch internal hard drive we’ve ever tested by a long shot.”

PC World’s pros and cons?

Jacobi summed up with a few useful highlights with these Pros and Cons:

Pros

  • 10TB of capacity
  • Reads and writes at over 200MBps
  • 5-year, 900TB write warranty

Cons

  • Nothing to speak of — keep it backed up
