R.I.P. PC Gaming…Kind Of

Last week, Electronic Arts announced that their online gaming service, Origin, would transition to only digital downloads or computer games putting the nail in the coffin for discs.

The writing for this has been on the wall for some time, not only in the computer gaming market, but the console one as well. Before jumping into what’s now called the current gen systems with Xbox One and PlayStation®4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 allowed for digital downloads of games for quite some time.

Valve’s Steam service has been using a digital only format since inception and it’s done pretty well for them.

The transition to digital is a logical one as it eliminates wastes, decreases production costs and gives the added benefit to the gamer to have almost instantaneous access to their favorite games without having to take off their bunny slippers.   One downside of this, however, is that you’ll need to make sure you’ve got a strong enough Internet connection to make this of value. But if you’re this gaming savvy, why wouldn’t you?

Congrats, EA, on joining the the 21st century with the likes of Apple, Netflix, Hulu and a slew of other sources that is providing digital only entertainment.

*Editor’s note – it’s been noted that Steam has not been 100% digital since inception. Our author has since been smacked upside the head for such sweeping generalizations.
