My family is spaced out – not geographically but chronologically. My sisters are eight and eleven years older than me. It makes it interesting because I almost feel like between the three of us, we had two different sets of parents. There are family photos without me in them because I didn’t exist yet. My oldest sister had four boys where the oldest is thirty-one and the youngest twenty-four. My son, their first cousin is eight. My second nephew who’s twenty-nine just had his second child a month ago and his oldest daughter is rapidly approaching three. So yeah, we’ve got some “distance” between us.
We recently took a family camping trip, as we’ve not all gotten together since last Thanksgiving. I found it really interesting to watch was the dynamic between my son and his older cousins. To paint the picture, the shortest of my nephews is 5’11 and my son maybe 4’3 on a good day. But that didn’t stop him at all from playing basketball, frisbee or anything else the “big boys” were doing while his younger cousin was self-entertained in the wading pool.
I took quite a few photos on this trip. I wanted the opportunity to capture some fun moments so I could look back on the trip sometime down the line. As a single parent, I find these moments to connect with family really important so that my son will have these tangible memories as he grows from a boy to a man.
