Your Media. Your Way.

How do you access your media? Do you use a smartphone? A tablet? Or are you “old fashioned” and use your computer?

There are many ways to consume music and video these days be it Spotify, Slacker, YouTube, Hulu and several others that make “on demand” programming almost a staple. It’s become so ingrained into our regular lives; I can barely remember a time without it.

The (relatively) low price point for tablets and smartphones add to that accessibility of on demand programming letting you take yourself out of the living room and into the coffee shops, the libraries and even the commuter trains to enjoy your favorite shows.

Our society has really become one where you can get your media, your way. (I will randomly award a GoFlex Satellite to one person who can correctly tell me which fast food company had a similar slogan. I’ll announce a winner in the comments section 5/29/12)

Anyway, the same can be said for storage. I keep an external drive in my bag at all times and I’ll have a different drive in another bag just in case I take that one. The rise of cloud storage has really taking this anytime/anywhere mantra to heart to the point where you can literally get your media your way.  (BTW, R.I.P. ZumoDrive)

I remember growing up watching Star Trek and learning about the concept of IDIC – Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.  The short version of this concept is how there are millions of variables for things in the universe. The same can be said about electronic devices on the market. For example, if I’m on the go covering a show like CES? Then it’s my Slim and my Android phone. In a situation where I have the chance to be more stationary, then maybe my laptop and my GoFlex Pro. I don’t have to worry about whatever infinite combination I use to access my data because it’s always “on demand.”

So how do you access your media?

Ah, ye olde Burger King slogan! I access my media as much and as often as I can—external drives, SSD, the internet, my TiVo, my tablet and phone, the works!

The answer would be Burger King.

Media access is usually streamed from our media server, either OTA with smart phone/iPad or directly to the TV through HDMI.

I still mainly use my laptop but have also been using my iPad more these days.
We do seem to love getting our media, our way!
“Have it your way” is the famous Burger King advertising slogan–with all the options, it’s quite true!

And I get my media from my computers ;shared network and NAS various forms of external storage, thumb drives ,SSD USB 3.0 drive and a pop in 3.5″/2.5″ drive reader. My iPhone has some stuff and I believe I have a few ‘cloud’ accounts used rarely.

I’m old fashioned and stream media from my PC or external HDD to TV using a PBO Media player. Have it your way is Burger King’s slogan. I like my burger to have a toasted bun but seeing as they don’t toast buns then I can’t have it my way now can I! I guess I’ll stick to Harvey’s.

I’ll have it my Whopper my way from Burger King!

I first only utilized Dropbox for all of my cloud storage needs. It was a perfect connected solution with an iOS app, web connectivity, and native folder integration in OS X. The problem was paying for more space! Thankfully, I now use a Seagate GoFlex Home! I have native OS X integration using a mounted network hard drive, love using the mobile app to access my files – even using the built in media player for movies on the go -, and can even access the drive from anywhere using the web application. Even better, I can send access URLs to my folders via the web app and restrict access to email addresses I know. SO, personal Cloud storage FTW!

I would have to say burger king as their slogan is “Have it your way” and it fits as there are times when you want to feel free roam around and don’t have to worry tangled cords or computers that are unable to recognize what you’ve plugged in. Although I use sound cloud for my music, I want to just play my music seamlessly without having to log in just to go straight to my music. I use hulu to watch my favorite shows that I’ve missed, but with hulu plus, you have to have a subscription as well with netflix. I want to watch and access what I want when I want it without hassles and be able to view it anywhere.

Burger King! ). Burger King’s most popular product, the Original Whopper Sandwich was introduced to the world in 1957. The Whopper became a huge success and is still a world known sandwich that has a perfect fire-grilled taste (www.burgerking.ca/en/1121/index.php). This tasty hamburger was created to satisfy their customer so that any one as customer can have their food their own way which relates to their slogan “Have it your way”, created in 1974. They state that their vision is to “proudly serve the best burgers in the business, plus a variety of real authentic foods….all freshly prepared…. just the way you want it”

I’m not really a big cloud user right now. I have a pretty stringent back-up regimen, where my main data is on a SSD, media and larger files (as well as secondary back -up) are on an internal drive, and I have an external drive where I make regular back-ups of important data. Since I deal with a lot of large data and I’m backing up a lot of files, I haven’t bothered with cloud storage yet since I imagine it’ll take forever to upload the files.

When it comes to mobile data, I just use a USB stick. Probably not very secure, but I don’t put any vital data on there (it’s usually just for media transfers).

    Also, Burger King!

Burger King is the answer you want.

I don’t carry a harddrive with me everywhere because having all those wires is quite a fuss. Instead, I put some of my essentials on my phone and on Dropbox. Dropbox is good because I can have the app on my android, and it integrates very well with my PC. However the android app is a bit rubbish, it’s hard to download multiple files, and viewing pictures straight out of the app is bad quality.
My main computer is usually on when I’m out of the house, so I can control that via Logmein and send the files via Dropbox. I also use Logmein Hamachi to send files between remote computers (Amazon EC2), but I’m frustrated that there’s no android app for that.
In terms of managing media at home, we have a PC “nettop” plugged in under the TV, it handles files, printing, or long processing jobs, and we also use it to view media on the big screen.

The system need modernising, but we don’t have the money! The main aim is to have all your data, easily, reliably and securely available to you, all the time, wherever you go. There are several ways to do this, but they all involve either subscriptions, or an extra one-time cost for us!
