Your Smartphone as a Game Controller?

I’m all about innovation, and the CEA President, Paul Shapiro, declared during the Qualcomm keynote speech that we would be seeing a great deal of innovations during the course of the week of CES.  But unless an innovation can have an impact on a personal level, it’s just another trinket.

Well hellooooo, Aiwi!

Aiwi is a software app that connects your PC to your smartphone (Android or iPhone) to let you use that device as a gaming controller.  With Aiwi, you don’t need to spend money on a console and all your games are available on the website for download? It’s simple as:

  • Downloading the software to your PC
  • Downloading the app to your smartphone
  • Wirelessly connect and game on!

Giving it a demo first hand, the controls were quick, responsive and very easy. In Sega Virtua Tennis (they have other big titles too such as Street Fighter, Assassin’s Creed and Need for Speed), selecting where to hit the ball was a matter of choosing a direction on the smartphone.  I won my demo match, but I think the representative was being kind.

They have a number of other games available through their online store. If you can’t afford an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii, but want something fun for the family, then Aiwi maybe the game for you.

Using a smartphone as a game controller – what do you think about this innovation? Leave your thoughts below or drop us a line on Twitter.  Also check out our other blogs covering CES.
