AT&T to offload data charges to the app maker?

“AT&T is considering a plan that would allow app makers to pay for the data subscribers consume using their apps.”

That’s according to this post by Andrew Couts on Digital Trends, “John Donovan, AT&T’s head of network and technology, says that the country’s second-largest wireless provider is considering a “toll-free calling” plan for mobile apps. The system would work in a similar way to 1-800 numbers in that the company providing the service (in this case, the app maker), would cover the connection costs.”

No doubt that as we become more and more mobile and new and even better apps are developed utilizing what the cloud has to offer, our data usage has nowhere to go but up.  And given today’s bandwidth limitations, that means so do the costs of using said applications.

At first glance, I was like, “Yes!” But, after further thought, I wondered if such a program would hinder adoption and thus innovation of smaller developers and the applications they bring to market. Andrew makes this point as well in his article.  Then again, maybe as long as the big guys pay for data intensive apps, we as users can afford to utilize our allotted data bandwidth for the smaller apps we’ve come to love, and free data usage is never a bad thing…or is it?

What do you think?
