There’s no silver bullet in enterprise storage

Seagate announced a new generation of Cheetah 3.5″ enterprise drives in SAS and FC flavors.  2.5″ drives are the future of performance disk drives, but there’s no silver bullet for all enterprise storage needs.

Today’s high capacity applications are increasing storage space demands on data centers to levels never before seen.

When capacity is the priority, Cheetah’s 600 GB per drive capacity can’t be matched by 2.5″ drives.  Even more capacity is available from enterprise 1 TB SAS and SATA drives like the Seagate Barracuda ES.

Five years ago enterprise-ready 7200 RPM drives didn’t even exist. They now account for over half of all enterprise storage capacity, according to InfoStor and IDC.

There’s no turning back.  Data centers will increasingly blend capacity and performance drives at 2.5″ as well, once capacity-optimized 2.5″ enterprise capacity drives hit the market later this year. SSD will widen the spectrum further as the highest performance storage option.
