Don’t shy away from fully utilized storage

Jon Toigo at DrunkenData.com points out that businesses are wasting vast amounts of capacity, and observes that storage system vendors like it that way.  Sadly true in some cases.

But in the long run, solution providers make more money by helping their customers fully utitize their storage systems.

Improving capacity utilization is low hanging fruit for improving your customers’ business.  And while focusing on getting better use of existing storage assets may temporarily slow down storage sales, in the long run it will accelerate demand.

My experience is that when net useable storage capacity drops significantly in cost, businesses spend more than they would have before. More $, not just more capacity.

Why? Because there’s yet more valuable things to do with data that cheap and easy to use storage make possible.

Be a catalyst, not an inhibitor!
