7200 rpm notebook hard drives used to be a luxury, something for the power user.
That’s no longer the case. 7200 rpm drives are quicly becoming the best choice for mainstream notebooks. There’s a lot to like and not much downside to using 7200 rpm drives, as this I4U review comparing Seagate’s Momentus 7200 drive to 5400 rpm notebook drives attests:
- The same capacity (up to 500GB) as 5400 rpm
- Miniscule difference in power consumption
- 25% better performance in Sandra XII and Everest Ultimate benchmark tests
What’s not to like?
There’s another reason for the switchover to 7200 rpm drives on notebook PCs: that happens to be the speed of mainstream desktop disk drives. As people swap their desktop PCs for more mobile notebooks, they want to see the same performance.
Something to think about when shopping for your next PC.
