[Infographic]: Data Storage 101

Check out this infographic by Rackspace.

There are a few a-ha moments in this infographic that help paint a picture for the future of data storage.

  • The analog to digital (A2D) evolution is just about over.
  • Consumers create more data than businesses.
  • Businesses touch more data than consumers.
  • Either education’s not creating its share of data, or our education infrastructure lacks resources to digitize and store their data. In what ways do you think education could benefit from greater digital data use?
  • Government is the 2nd biggest collector of data in the world.
  • The US has >10x more data than China…for now.
  • Nearly the same percentage of businesses use private clouds (3%)  for 100% of their storage needs as businesses that use NAS (4%)

Any predictions for what these numbers look like 5 years from now?

As much useful data as there is, I wonder how much of it is junk or copies. Like in the video industry, there could be different cuts and copies of one file but adding a lot of junk. I’m sure half of what’s on my computer is junk that needs to be cleaned.
