Is Barracuda’s “the Power of One” just a pretty catchphrase?

Power of One: A catchy phrase? Or a strategic vision?

Last November, Seagate’s PC hard drive product team streamlined its three desktop HDD (Barracuda XT, Barracuda, Barracuda Green) products really into one single solution – “Barracuda”. Sure, the Barracuda XT is still around, but that drive is bound to become a solid state hybrid drive sometime this year.  So, when it comes to choosing a desktop-class hard drive for your PC upgrade, or external storage solution, you now have just one, simple offering from Seagate.

Seagate’s desktop marketing team played this up as the Power of One based on the new drive’s 1TB/platter design, and also laid the gauntlet down regarding the prevailing myth of the “green” drive in its literature and in articles like this one from Tom’s Hardware. This video says it all:

The proof is in the pudding, and who better to evaluate that pudding than the reviewer community?

“The Barracuda 3TB displayed a few splashes of read-speed brilliance and matched up decently with the other similarly-spec’d drives in our tests…the current Barracuda XT line is being phased out and will be reborn as a series of hybrid drives, so if you want a standard Seagate HDD with these features, the newer Barracuda 3TB is the way to go.”  – Hot Hardware

“These features” are capacity, performance, low power…all in a single solution. And that is the essence of the Power of One. Music to our ears: “… the newer Barracuda 3TB is the way to go.”

The consensus among reviewers is that the Power of One does carry some weight after all.
