Livin’ large – Seagate 1.5TB is best selling drive in 2009

barracuda_white_loresEverything Channel released their Channel Bestsellers List for 2009.

When it comes to hard drives, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB drive took the best seller category.

Think about that for a second…what does that tell us?

  • 1.5 Terabytes is at the upper end of the HDD category (2TB being the largest drive made in 2009) – people are not skimping on storage.
  • 1.5TB was the upgrade sweet spot? Perhaps, the best bang for the buck given the 2TB price premiums in 2009
  • One could argue 500GB was the sweet spot for storage inside desktops, so a total of 2.oTBs total storage per desktop system.
  • 7200.11 firmware concerns – Seagate addressed them quickly and the channel responded positively.
  • Will 2.0TB be the sweet spot in 2010, should 3.0TB drives emerge this year?

We’ll have to wait to see where the channel takes us in 2010. It should be a fun year for storage.

The 7200.11 drive has seemingly disappeared from store shelves, to be virtually-silently replaced by the 5900RPM drive in the same packaging (only visible difference is the tiny “5900” part of the label).

Can you clarify why Seagate (or its distributors) has stopped carrying the retail 7200.11 1.5TB drive?

    Thanks!
