Seagate “easily” breaks the 3.0TB ceiling

Today, Seagate announced a 3.0TB version of its Barracuda XT high performance line of desktop hard drives.

You can check out all of the specs here.

What separates this product from the rest of the 3.0TB pack is that it is “Industry’s Easiest To Deploy” as the press release states.  For the past year Seagate’s website and blogs have been talking about the issue of breaking the 2.1TB limitation:

Back in the early 1980s, no one could fathom a hard drive approaching even 1TB, so limiting the logical block address (LBA) range to 2.1TB was thought to be more than adequate. As a result, operating systems, BIOS controllers, host interface drivers and device drivers have used the same basic limitation of 2.1TB.

So what makes this drive so easy to deploy?

Seagate’s DiscWizard™ software that comes with the drive, and is a free download off of Seagate’s website makes it simple to configure the computer operating system and device drivers to access the full 3TB…even on Windows XP based systems. To combat any buyer confusion, or frustration, Seagate has taken some additional steps to make sure consumers are experiencing all 3TB of of their drive.  For one, they actually added instructions and the URL to the the Beyond 2.1TB support site on the drive label itself. The site supports multiple languages as well making it easy for consurmers to enable their Barracuda XT drive no matter where they reside in the world.

Seagate customer feedback from past products not only indicated that the products be easy to use and deliver as promised, but also finding the information and tools that enable the ease of use is equally as important.  Looks like Seagate is working to do both, and that is a breath of fresh air.
