Seagate shows its enterprise teeth

What does a mother grizzly bear and Seagate have in common?

Today, Seagate showed its teeth by announcing its largest launch of enterprise storage products to date.

I’m not about to regurgitate all of the speeds and feeds on these products. You can see for yourself by checking out the press release, and individual product pages on Seagate’s website.

As far as I’m concerned, the meat of this announcement is the fact that Seagate has put a metaphorical “stake in the ground” when it comes to enterprise storage for both hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD).  In total, Seagate announced 32 new model numbers comprised of multiple interfaces and features like self-encrypting drive technology.  If you factor in the refresh to the existing Constellation ES.1 line (adding 6Gb/s SATA and AES-256 encryption), the total launch equals 44 new models, surpassing EMC’s “record breaking” launch of 41 new products this past January.  Now, I won’t even attempt to compare Seagate’s launch to EMC’s, but thought that I would raise the point in terms of its significance.

I started with Seagate in 2005, and enterprise product launches have typically been handled on an individual basis.  You could count on a new capacity bump for Savvio or Constellation combined with some new feature every 12 to 18 months. Occasionally, an entirely new product like Pulsar comes along, and follows the same kind of cadence…until now.  This collective introduction of new products for the enterprise space tells me there has never been more attention and cohesive development and strategy across all enterprise products than now. Coincidentally, the competition for the enterprise space has heated up.

What’s your take?
