My super simple transition to Mac c/o GoFlex

This week marked the family’s first PC refresh in 6 years!

Shocking but true.

Prior to working for Seagate, I worked for a custom system builder in St Paul, MN called Now Micro. Working for a small custom system builder with personal relationships with Intel, Microsoft, Seagate, AMD, nVidia, etc. I was spoiled when it came to PC upgrades. The trend was at least every 2 years, I was bringing home some sweet new rig with the latest processor, hard drive, and Microsoft OS, video card, etc. But those days have long passed, and with them, my appetite or ability to upgrade on a regular basis.

My last PC:  White box: Intel P4 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, Windows XP Media Center, Seagate Barracuda 500GB hard drive, DVD-ROM, DVD+/-RW, 19″ monitor, etc.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and retired this crusty yet reliable system (a single component has yet to fail), and replaced it with the newest iMac with Intel i5, 4GB RAM, 1TB hard drive, 21″ display, etc. and we couldn’t be happier. (Probably because this thing is light years faster than what we were used to. ) For me it was the experience of moving all my content from the Windowss XP machine to the iMac.

Armed with a 500GB GoFlex portable drive, I copied all of my (and my kids’) music, photos, video, documents, the whole kitchen sink over to the GoFlex drive. Since the GoFlex is compatible with both the Windows and Mac OS, plugging it in and dragging everything over to the Mac was super simple. It took some time given I was using USB 2.0, but time well spent. Now that I have a Mac, I’ll be ordering my GoFlex FireWire adapter for a measly $25.00, and potentially a Thunderbolt adapter when it arrives hopefully by the end of the year.

Now, I need to focus on backup, and since Seagate released the update to GoFlex Home, it’s now compatible with Mac OSX Lion running Time Machine.  That’s a project for the weekend. Then again, it only takes 5 minutes to setup…so Labor Day weekend is not shot after all…now I can relax.

What’s your plan for relaxation this Labor Day weekend?
