UltraViolet’s digital lockers in the sky

Wired Magazine reports the formation of UltraViolet – The Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem made up of powerhouses like Sony Pictures, Microsoft, Warner bros, Cisco and Adobe (and a bunch of others) are teaming up to provide a standard for storing and using digital entertainment content over the long haul.  Wired writer Eliot Van Buskirk writes:

“The fundamental concept at work here is simple: Whenever you buy a movie on DVD, Blu-ray, or as a download, you’ll get a “token” representing your ownership of that movie, which a number of services and devices will be able to access — even if the new device or service had nothing to do with the original sale.”

The impact this will have on storage is huge since we are talking about storing movies both in the home and in the cloud.  I did notice the list of companies participating in this endeavor did not include any consumer external storage giants like Seagate, Iomega, WD, etc.  Perhaps Seagate’s GoFlex TV is one of those consumer devices that will be UltraViolet ready in the future.  I don’t know, but it makes sense to me.

One thing’s for sure, since these digital lockers are in the cloud, there is bound to be Seagate drives storing the content.

Check it out.
