Validation… laptop thinners work

Hitachi’s latest product announcement of a new ultra-thin 2.5-inch drive for the notebook space is welcoming news…

When Seagate announced it’s Momentus Thin back in December of 2009, they were the only drive manufacturer to develop a thin (7mm) drive for ultra-thin notebooks and netbooks.  That held true until now (only 6 months later).  What does this mean? Well, to me it means that thin is in, and OEMs will be pushing thinner notebooks, and even Netbooks with more storage.  The big OEMs (take your pick) see greater opportunities with ultra-thin laptops in the future, as did Seagate originally, and now Hitachi. Let’s face it, we all want to lighten the load when it comes to what we lug around without having to solely rely on SSD.  We want our ultra-thin laptop, and we want our hundreds of gigabytes of storage, but we don’t want to pay the significant premium that goes with SSD.

So, thank you Hitachi for listening to the market and developing a thin notebook drive…  Now my sibling Momentus XT needs to wait to see who will jump on the Hybrid bandwagon.

Sincerely,

Seagate Momentus Thin.
