3 Reasons Why You Should Backup Your Computer

The idea of backing up your computer is a good one and shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.  But some people (and sometimes myself included) need a gentle reminder of why backing up your computer is a good idea. So let’s break it down for you.

To protect your content – Financial documents, movies, music, photographs, sound effects, custom icons, video game files, manuscripts, love letters, business proposals, recipes, schedules, banners, graphics, cartoons, motivational quotes and the list goes on and on.  It’s your stuff.

Imagine the frustration of not finding your car keys or losing your wallet. Multiply that by about 500 and you can imagine what losing the content you’ve been storing for years can be like.  With Seagate hard drives, we’ve made backing up your computer as easy as a couple mouse-clicks. The couple minutes spent setting it up will save you hours of heartbreak if something were to happen to your hard drive.

To preserve your memories – Ever have that situation where you’re trying to find a certain photo from your childhood or an event but can’t? Used to happen to me all the time. I’m still looking for this amazing shot I had the one time I met Director/Actor Kevin Smith. But it’s gone. Had I been backing up my computer then, it may still be around. And don’t get me started on the “touchy/feely” stuff like kids birthdays, pets and loved ones from days gone by. You spent the time making those memories, protect and keep them safe by backing up your computer.

To protect yourself from “life” – Some time back, Seagate had the slogan “Life Happens, Back it Up.”  It still applies today. You drop your computer. You spill your coffee. Your computer is old and just dies. Life happens. But if you backup your computer, that added protection can help you breath a little easier that your data will be ok. It’s like having car insurance – you don’t plan to have an accident, but it’s good to know that if something does happen, you’re going to be covered. So don’t take unnecessary risks, backup your computer. (And let’s shamelessly plug our Seagate Rescue + Replace program.)

One more important thing to keep in mind when talking about backing up is that you need two copies on two different drives or it’s not a backup. That’s an easy, but important rule of thumb easily forgotten.

Backing up your computer shouldn’t be considered a doomsday scenario. It’s insurance. It’s protection. It’s smart and it’s easy. So don’t delay, “check yourself before you wreck yourself.” – Das EFX
