Basketball – My Love of the Game

Basketball has always been my favorite sport. I won’t date myself by stating publically when I first got into it but I will say that it was during a time where one of the greatest battles were taking place yearly between a team in green and a team in gold.

It is consistently one of the few video games that I will buy on the day of release each year.  As I’ve grown, I’ve started to follow individual players as well as teams. For example, while I was never really a Chicago Bulls fan, you couldn’t help but watch a game if Michael Jordan was playing. I was ecstatic when LeBron James joined the Miami Heat because I just couldn’t get into the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The NBA season is about to kick off and I’ve cleared off space on my DVR, my ESPN mobile app is programmed and I’m already looking at travel packages so I can try to get out for the All-Star game in February. (It’s my birthday month if anyone wants to contribute to the cause.)

Why my love for basketball? Simple. It’s the pacing, speed and the definitive athleticism. I mean really, some of the dunks these guys do are nothing short of amazing. I love watching archival footage of old games, documentaries on the sport or players and appreciating the legacy that former superstars have left behind as well as the promise shown by rookies to the game. While some of my favorite players are now retired (or shooting car commercials), it’s great to see where the franchise will go once that vacancy is filled.

One debate about basketball that I am often witness to is who’s the better player – Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant?  Well, because this is such a popular topic, I was able to find a handy-dandy infographic that outlines the stats and highlights of their careers.  A graphic like this just continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining data because without it, we’d never know. And this matchup is pretty impressive.

Special thank you to Tyson Beck and Lakers Nation for this amazing infographic.
