Pepcom Digital Experience – The “Other” CES

One thing I love about the Pepcom show is that depending when it takes place, it really gets you in the mood for the Consumer Electronics Show a.k.a. CES. Being at E3 earlier this month was great. Having spent so much time in the gaming industry, it was like a homecoming. Yet since joining Seagate almost a year ago, I’ve really come to embrace my tech loving side.

And if you love gadgets, then Pepcom Digital Experience is right up your alley. If you’ve never been to the show before, I would describe it as a more intimate version of CES that while there is a good deal of people in attendance, it won’t overwhelm you and you’ll be able to get some good face time (no Apple pun intended) with vendors to learn more about their products.  As is the case with these types of shows, there is a lot to take in, but let me hit you with some of the things I’d recommend keeping an eye on.

Doodle.ly – Taking a page out of the book for the game Draw Something, this charming iPad app gives you a selection of brushes, pens, pencils and markers with a vibrant selection of colors to let you scribble to your hearts content. You can also create a profile to showcase your doodles as well as the doodles of the friends you may be following as well. It’s like Instagram for the artistically enabled.

Maingear – Pure and simple, Maingear makes computers; sleek and sexy. Even better in that they use our hard drives in their systems. What caught my eye for them at the show was the killer flight simulation setup they had on hand customized by people who are legitimate pilots. Definitely check out the photo of me giving the Cessna a spin in our photo gallery on Facebook.

Mophie – A few of my team members swear by Mophie, but I’ve never had the chance to really check them out until they saved my phone from death due to taking pictures and taking notes from booth visits.  I am now a believer.  If you’re on the go like I often am, having a battery backup that is easily accessible and portable is a must have. I can’t begin to imagine why I waited so long to get one.

LifeProof – There are a ton of iPhone/iPad cases on the market. Some are pretty, some are pretty ugly, but they all tout some special feature that makes them stand out above the rest. But what really grabbed my attention was the demo of the iPhone sitting in a tank of water to showcase the durability of these cases. Built to take on rain, snow, dirt and dark of night, this case can probably be used to stop a tank. (Ok, so that last part wasn’t tested.) Now if only they’d make one for Android devices.

Pivothead – I’ve been waiting for something like this and Pivothead is leading the way making stylish glasses that will capture 1080p HD video or 8MP photos in multiple settings with up to 8GB of storage. These glasses are perfect whether you’re a musician, an action junkie or a parent with an active toddler. Retailing for $349, I know what I’ll be asking Santa for this year.

Another Pepcom Digital Experience has come and gone, but I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on these companies to see what else they have in the pipeline and you should too.

Comments are welcome below a well as on Facebook and Twitter.  Also be sure to check out photos from the show on Flickr and Facebook.
