Rumor: No hard drive in Nintendo HD?

Okay, I’m not a gamer, but it’s hard to ignore the rumor mill surrounding the pending announcement of Nintendo’s new game console.

Being a storage guy, the headline that caught my eye was that of gameinformer.com that reads, “Latest Nintendo HD Rumor Suggests Limited Storage“.  I have paid enough attention to the game console market to know that it’s dominated by Xbox and Playstation, with the Wii having it’s day in the sun 1-2 years ago.  Are the rumors true that the Wii is officially done?  My kids would be disappointed, but at least it gives them an excuse to beg for an Xbox Kinect this year.

Back to the Nintendo HD rumor regarding storage….as gameinformer.com (via Kotaku) puts it, “if this is true, it would make robust downloadable content and bigger downloadable games difficult to squeeze onto the system without quickly filling up users’ available memory.”

The Kotaku article also states, “By offering 8GB of storage, Nintendo would not be able to offer full-sized new games for download, a practice that has been promoted on the Xbox 360 and, to a lesser extent, the PlayStation 3, in recent years. It would also be unlikely to store downloaded feature films without additional, user-supplied storage.”

There’s the 3 magical words: user-supplied storage.  Makes me wonder if Nintendo has plans for external storage with the new console due out sometime in 2012. Perhaps a candidate for Apple Thunderbolt connection, or even USB 3.0 allowing the bandwidth for users to stream downloaded games from the drive to the console.  I’m not about to start another rumor. I am just speculating here…maybe hoping is more like it.

What have you heard?
