Shiny Futures with Chrome and Bing

ms-vs-google

Microsoft and Google seem to be trying to hit each other where it can hurt most.  While  Microsoft’s Bing search engine, or should I say “decision engine”, is actually taking share from Google , the search engine giant takes their own swing at Microsoft with the announcement to extend Chrome, from a mere browser to entire operating system! I personally have to confess to being a convert of Google’s Chrome browser, which I find fast and love the capability to easily ad tabs.  But can Google really take a strong swing at Microsoft on the OS front?

The strategy seems to be to chase the netbook market first, and expand from there with success.  Dean Takahashi did a solid article on Google’s opportunities here.  Beyond the standard netbook and PC markets though, I see that the Google Chrome OS could also have effective extensions into Microsoft’s CE market with versions of the Chrome OS tuned to set-top-boxes and other CE type appliances.

It’s pretty fun to watch two software powerhouses go at it! It’s can’t be bad for the consumer in the long run too!
