Different can be good, and Smashmuck Champions by Kiz Studios is all kind of different. Sure, there are similarities to other MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena) games, but the ability to quickly choose your character, and jump into a game really makes Smashmuck Champions a fun, accessible experience.
The art design for the characters is top notch and really plays into their abilities in the game. Taking a quick detour a moment, one of the really cool aspects of game development that I want to highlight is how the team will have characters created based on panel participation at events like PAX Prime or PAX East. They had a session at last weeks PAX Prime event in Seattle and created the character Kovax Nobo. This is an amazing way to get fans of the game involved in the creative process and increase their level of emotional investment to the game.
The rest of the characters are just as clever, stylish and full of personality. Each will have varied attributes catering to your preferred playing style, so I strongly suggest giving each one a go through until you can find one that suits you. (I found myself partial to Blitz!)
There are currently five various game modes to choose from including Destroyer (resource combat) and Conquest (Control Point Capture) as well as a few others that are sure to make a varied gaming experience.
Arena design is also fun, and completely in line with the tone of the game. Designed for 3v3 or 5v5 matches to fit with the game type, the level design is complex enough to provide a challenge, but simple enough to easily get a lay of the land. I’m also a huge fan of level verticality (the ability to go up/down as well as left right) so that’s also a plus.
Smashmuck Champions was a lot of fun and I’m glad I had a chance to get some game time in during the PAX Prime show. Being free-to-play as well as being available for either Mac or PC, I can easily see myself spending a good deal of time becoming the ultimate Smashmuck champion.
