The Digital Afterlife

No one likes to think about death.  It’s dark, scary and makes people uncomfortable. But if there’s anything that I’ve learned from watching Disney’s The Lion King, it’s that death is a part of life.

But what about your digital content?

I was reading this article entitled “Who inherits your iTunes library?” where they were attempting to answer the question of what happens to your digital media content after you go to infinity and beyond.

The article states that the biggest challenge is that digital content is different than physical media because owners have a license to use the files, but they aren’t actually “owned.” Until there is a way for content to be legally inherited, it creates a bit of rabbit hole.

I’ll admit that the question of what happens to my content after I join The Force isn’t something I’ve ever given thought to. Heck, I still don’t have a will that isn’t written on a napkin somewhere from when I was in high school. (Don’t ask – it was a homework assignment.)

Until this legal stuff is sorted out, I guess I can always just will my hard drives to someone. Or maybe I’ll take them with me in case heaven doesn’t have Spotify.
