The NBA All-Stars Take a Break…Sort Of

February has been a pretty active month. We started off with the Super Bowl, went straight to the GRAMMY Awards, this weekend is NBA All-Star Weekend and we’ll cap it off with the Oscars.  I should be tired, but I’m not. This makes for a very exciting time and anyone who knows me knows how much I love basketball and look forward to All-Star Weekend.

Here’s why.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been fascinated by “fantasy match-ups”.  Whether it’s in comics, movies or sports, I’ve always wanted a situation where my favorites can come together and see who’s really the best.  The comics world did it with the DC vs. Marvel series. Movies did it with The Expendables 2 (and the Expendables). Sports are no different where you have the Pro Bowl (for football) and the All-Star Game (for baseball). But when it comes to basketball, you don’t just get a game, but you get a whole weekend of events including the Sharp-Shooting Contest, Slam Dunk Contest, 3-Pt Contest, the Skills Challenge and much more. Oh, and there will be a musical performance or two with Ke$ha leading the charge.

The NBA has a long, historic lineage. The sport has been around since the late 1800’s and has given us some household names and athletic greats such as Michael Jordan, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Glenn “Doc” Rivers, Julius Erving and many more. In looking at the NBA All-Star web site, it was great to see some of the archived footage from past challenges including the epic contest from 1988 between Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins. Like I’ve always said, storage is everywhere.

The All-Star Game is sure to put some players into the spotlight and when two titans tussle (a.k.a. East vs. West), it’ll be an interesting contest to see who comes out on top.
