While Vine wasn’t the first app where you can create short, sharable videos (I think that award goes to the retired 12seconds,), nor is it one of the more original (I’ll award that to Magisto) it definitely was one that took off like wildfire.
Maybe it was because of the ease of use; maybe it was just right place/right time. But they were making a dominant play in the video sharing space until Instagram made their June announcement of including video as part of their feature set.
