Why the World Needs the Man of Steel

“Superman is undeniably the greatest Super Hero in the world and likely the most influential comic book character of all time.”  – Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment.

I wasn’t always a huge fan of Superman. I thought he was too much of a “goody-goody” and the anti-heroes were always more interesting. But as I matured, I found him to be an interesting character. It isn’t the fact that he can leap tall buildings, fly, or has super strength & speed. Nor is it the heat vision, x-ray vision or even his super breath.  What I have found to be interesting is how his peers perceive him in comicdom as well as his everlasting belief in people. Having a similar conversation with a friend recently, we concluded that his superpower is infinite hope in people to be at their best.  To do the right thing now matter the circumstances.

Seventy-five years is a long time for anything.  It’s a legacy. I’m glad to see DC Entertainment giving the Man of Steel his due given how long he has endured as a character, pop culture icon and as a symbol.

My admiration of Superman over the years has become aspirational. Regardless of who’s writing him, regardless of medium (film, television or comics), he’s always done what’s right. He’s an example of how one man can make a difference and rally those around him to do likewise. He’s a mirror of what people could be not what they have to be.

And I love that we have the history of the character preserved that we can share it for another seventy-five years.  He was one of the first and is definitely one of the greatest heroes ever created.

Happy 75 years, Kal El. May you continue to prosper for many more.
