Wireless Plus Scores for World Cup Broadcaster

He Wei used a Seagate Wireless Plus drive to quickly access information for his World Cup broadcasts.

A popular Chinese broadcaster covered the 2014 World Cup with a big storage assist from Seagate.

He Wei, a commentator with China’s CCTV, made sure to pack along a 1TB Wireless Plus portable drive when he traveled to Brazil, the host country of football’s biggest event. Wei rose to fame while broadcasting the match between England and Germany at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. His commentary was filled with passion and excitement and was warmly received by China’s football fans and the media alike.

This year’s event, which ran from June 12 to July 13, featured 64 matches at 12 venues throughout Brazil. Wei and his three CCTV colleagues split the broadcasting duties, with each commentator working 16 games. That busy workload and travel schedule required technology that could stand up to the rigors of the road, where access to network connections can be unpredictable at best.

“Seagate’s Wireless Plus offers a lot of hard drive space, which makes it easy for me to store all the documents and videos I need,” Wei said. “And with its long battery life and built-in Wi-Fi, I can stream files to any of my devices, whether I’m at an airport, on a bus or plane. My files are accessible, wherever my work takes me.”

Having quick access to information is important in any job—particularly in Wei’s case, when he’s describing the ebb and flow of a nail-biting match to millions of TV viewers. Wei loads his Wireless Plus with everything he needs—from players’ statistics and biographies, to video highlights of past matches, to stadium and city information and more—to ensure his commentary is well-informed and entertaining.

“I have a huge amount of football information that’s readily accessible on the drive,” Wei said. “Before, I would usually record data by taking notes, and then hoping I didn’t lose any of those notes before a match started. With the Wireless Plus, I’ve found a much easier way to access that information.”

And just as all World Cup teams work hard to improve their skills to advance in the tournament, Seagate builds upon the capabilities and usefulness of its products. In May, the company expanded the capacity of Wireless Plus to 2TB—enough capacity to stream over 1,000 movies. And knowing that many people store their files in the cloud, Seagate added support for cloud services. With the updated Seagate Media app, users can save content and files wirelessly to the drive, as well as migrate files to popular cloud services like Dropbox and Google Drive.

“With my Wireless Plus, I can easily share fantastic football moments with our viewers,” said Wei. “It’s an amazing device.”
