“Driving” digital business models to survive

Reuters reports that Warner Music, the world’s 3rd largest music company,  is taking the right steps to put a stop to ongoing bleeding of CD sales over the past few years by making a stronger move to digital distribution.   According to Reuters, “Bronfman said Warner Music had signed a new European deal with the popular music streaming service Spotify, which has more than 10 million users in Europe.”

This writing has been on the wall for sometime. So when will the CD be a thing of the past?  I am one of those “old school” music junkies that continues to buy them.  Call me nostalgic, or stupid, but I like having the physical copy. Maybe it’s the artwork, the lyrics, or the warm hearted thank you letters from the artist on the inside of the jacket.  I especially buy the artists that I am most fond of.  I think Metallica and Godsmack may have been mentioned in previous blogs.  I also like to have all of the songs on the album and since I can get a CD from YourMusic.com for $6.99, why not?  I’ll still rip the CD to iTunes and stream music digitally throughout the house and car…call me a hybrid user stuck somewhere between digital and physical.

Makes you wonder if DVD sales are following the same pattern given the growth of NetFlix.  I doubt it given Blue Ray and 3D  is all the rage right now and streaming that content is not 100% in the cards just yet.  Maybe I’ll learn more at CES this January.

All I know is the business model today must have some element of digital distribution to survive. Such survival will “drive” the long term need for hard drives…which makes me happy.
