If you’ve been watching this space for the last few months, you’ll see I’m a bit of a television fan. Whether it was the launch of Revolution on NBC, Mad Men on AMC, mid-season replacement shows, (many of which got cancelled shortly after launch) the impact of television at an event like San Diego Comic Con, or even the popularity of Smart TV’s, it’s an entertainment medium which has had a huge impact on my life as well as the rest of the world.
A good television show is great fodder for water cooler talk at the office, text messages with friends and great for quality family time. But what do we really know about this magical device? I’ll be honest, when I took a closer look at this infographic; there were many things that surprised me. Here are a couple bullets that caught my eye:
- 1941 – Pearl Harbor bombed. CBS televises news of the attack.
- 1961 – John F. Kennedy is the first U.S. president to be inaugurated – in color.
- 1972 – HBO launches – the nation’s first pay-TV network.
- 1994 – DirectTV launches providing 200 audio & video channels.
- 1997 – Netflix established. They shipped their one billionth DVD in April 2009.
- 1998 – Commercial HDTV sets hit the market.
And things continue to evolve from here from Smart TV’s to 3D TV’s and we haven’t even touched the streaming revolution including Hulu, HBO GO and all those other lovely services that a business like storage is connected to.
Until we get to the point of holographic screens or television glasses, give this graphic a look to see how TV has evolved since it’s creation in 1926.
