CES Emphasizes The Connected Home

“Connected home” is a term that definitely circled around the show last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, and this year is no different. Before you cock your head to the side like a Cocker Spaniel asking, “What’s the big deal?” just know that last year was really only the tip of the iceberg.

Like all things that hit to market, there will always be early adopters who need to test the waters and want to be “first”. But the “average consumer” will wait to see if it’s more than just a passing fad as well as hold out for a more attractive price point.  (Remember when flat-screen TV’s first launched?)

The concept of having a connected home could be big in the next few years, especially if companies like LG Electronics, Samsung, Toshiba and others who’ve joined the Smart TV Alliance have anything to say about it.

The goal of this group is to “provide a productive ecosystem for Smart TV applications.”  I like to think of it like an app store for your television.

With the recent announcement of ABOX42 also joining the Smart TV Alliance, they are putting themselves in a prime position to be a dominant force in this space.

Then if you take a look at a company like Broadcom who’s core business is developing parts, chips and capabilities for the purpose a connected home, then it makes my comments about moving to an era similar to The Jetson’s from this post much more valid.

The connected home idea really hits home for us with our Seagate Central hard drive. This device will allow you to have a central repository for all of your music, movies, photos and regular documents that you can access from our Seagate Media app for (iOS or Android) anywhere, anytime.

The future is quickly becoming the present. Advances in technology to bring things together are being developed at a rapid rate.  CES isn’t even over, and I’m already trying to imagine what next year’s tech advancements will bring.

I love the idea of having a connected home. Once setup and it becomes the status quo, I think it’ll help make life a little bit easier.  And who doesn’t want that?
