Oh Snap! Here’s Why You Need an External Hard Drive

Christina Warren is my homebro.  I’m a long time fan of her work on Mashable.  Because of this entire iCloud scare, she took it upon herself to dig deeper and see how easy/difficult it is to hack her iCloud account in this article.  Turns out, it’s not that hard – especially if you’ve got about $200. Right about now, you may be having that “Oh Snap! I need an external hard drive (like a Seagate Backup Plus)” moment.

Go read her article about her “iHack” experience. She pens a great piece outlining steps taken, software used and what the results from it were. I can’t help but wonder now that she’s broken down the basics, is she now arming more people to go out and do the same? Well, I’ll let your own moral compass guide you, that’s not the point of this piece.

Let me first say I’m a cloud fan. I totally get the popularity – it’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s accessible.

But maybe it should also be temporary. Maybe the ideal cloud use is for short-term situations where you need access to something in a jiffy or are sharing something with friends or family or colleagues that aren’t sitting next to you or can look over your shoulder. For us Digital Den home users, the cloud can be looked at as a rest stop, not the final destination.

That’s what Seagate Backup Plus is – the final destination.  I can’t stress enough (ok, I can and have, but just roll with it) the importance of having a separate, external drive that is used for your private information. (Double entendre not intended.)

The need for an external drive shouldn’t be a hard sell, but its importance can be overlooked. It’s a bit like a microwave or refrigerator where you don’t think about them until something goes wrong and you’re in need of a new one. Well, that’s why I’m here, to help keep the importance of keeping your data secure top of mind for you so you don’t have to.

The cloud is a wonderful thing. It’s great for collaboration and it’s perfect as a quick storage solution when you’re in a jam, but for me, it’s not for long-term use.  Instead, make the investment for your own peace of mind and buy Seagate Backup Plus – a safe, inexpensive way to keep your private data private, yet still have it available for you wherever or whenever you need.
