Make me a 1 terabyte tablet media server

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about the Archos tablet and the shocking fact that it has a hard drive inside of it. Very untraditional in the tablet arena since a majority of them have flash.

Then I thought…

What if you could build a tablet with enough storage to hold your entire music, photo, and video library? Face it, hard drives are getting thinner, and the capacity per platter is getting bigger.  The day when we see a 1.0TB 7mm thin laptop drive is not far from reality. Given the capacity growth for 2.5-inch drives, I am gonna guess 2013 timeframe. Today, you can cram 320GB worth of content on a thin drive.  That’s enough to hold my 90GB of music, all my photos, and some of my HD video.  I get excited to think of the capability to store 3x what we can today on a tablet.

I could have a single tablet, with all of my content (backed up of course to my home NAS) andbe free to move from room to room, house to house, hotel to hotel for that matter, not only with my content, but ideally the technology to wirelessly stream the content to WIFI enabled TVs.  I could be visiting family in Wisconsin and stream a home movie to their 50-inch LCD TV, or demo videos to clients, or play music through any WIFI enabled audio system.

The technology already exists.  I am sure many of you are already streaming content from smartphones, tablets or laptops to your TVs and displays…all I know is that the 1.0TB equipped tablet, that’s one I have to wait for…but you know it’s coming.
